The Community That Doesn't Stop at Full Time: A Matchday With SA FC

Most fans arrive at the stadium an hour before kick-off. The SA Football Community (SA FC) got going hours earlier, and at the front door of football history.

On Saturday 26 September, SA FC led a supporters' convoy across Soweto on a Bafana Bafana Match Day Tour, retracing the footsteps of Coach Pitso "Jingles" Mosimane on the same day he took charge of the national team for the first match of his new era. At Third Culture Strategies, we support SA FC on the operational side, and this was the kind of day that reminds us why.

Roots in Phefeni

First up was Phefeni, home to the Mosimane family's roots, and just around the corner, the house of Dr Kaizer Motaung, which once served as the Kaizer Chiefs clubhouse. Gold and green on one step, black and gold on the next. In Soweto, football is part of the neighbourhood itself

A Mural Worth the Drive

From there, the convoy made its way to Jingles Corner in Senaoane. Back in 2018, the Mamelodi Sundowns Gauteng South Province supporters had a mural painted in Coach Pitso's honour, recognising the years he spent devoted to the game, making his impact. Credit to Masandawana: not many fan bases put their gratitude on a wall for the whole kasi to see.

Back to the Beginning

Next, Elkah Stadium in Rockville, the ground where a young Pitso played for amateur side Rockville Hungry Lions before the professional game came calling. Yes, his trophies get the headlines, but this pitch is where the story was first written.

Kota Break

No Soweto day is complete without a kota. For anyone outside Mzansi, it's a township street food classic: a quarter loaf of white bread, hollowed out and loaded with hot chips, a rib patty, cheese, a fried egg, atchar and a generous splash of sauce. SAWCY served it up exactly the way it should be. Our advice to anyone passing through: stop in, order big, and you'll understand.

Jingles Is Back

Then came the main event at Orlando Stadium, Bafana Bafana against Guinea in the opening 2027 AFCON qualifier, with Coach Pitso back in the dugout. The stands were full of gees, and the gold and green was out in force.

Beyond the 90 Minutes

For TCS, sport is always about more than the final score. SA FC is building something supporter-owned and community-first, connecting fans to the heritage, places and people behind the badge. A tour like this turns a fixture into a story fans carry with them, and that's the kind of supporter experience the game needs more of.

Big thanks to everyone who rode with the convoy. From the first stop to the final whistle, it was a day to remember.
